Ransom malouf5/10/2023 As King of Troy, Priam is used to the former-highly stylized arguments, speeches, and exchanges that follow rigid formulas. Whereas the stylized speech of the court tends to bind people more tightly to a set role in life, storytelling encourages them to look beyond the boundaries of self, space, and time.īroadly speaking, Ransom deals with two types of language: ceremonial and narrative. Most importantly, however, they provide a contrast to the rigid and formal language of the Trojan royal court. These interludes serve different purposes over the course of the novel, from offering necessary backstory to providing entertainment. Still, it is striking just how often Malouf interrupts the main narrative to tell a story-within-a-story. Given that the novel is a reworking of a preexisting story-told most famously in The Iliad-this is not surprising. In the Afterword to Ransom, Malouf says that he considers the novel to be, at heart, about storytelling.

March lewis5/10/2023 On the way, the hearse driver noticed Williams had a faint pulse and was barely breathing. Williams didn’t like coffee, but he bought a cup, threw the coffee out, and tried to slide open the door just enough to fill his cup with water from the fountain.Ī group of angry whites saw him at the “whites only” fountain and beat him so savagely they thought they had killed him and called a black funeral home to pick up the body. But it was 1945 in the segregated South, and blacks were not allowed in the bus station, not even decorated WWII soldiers. The bus stopped in Americus, Ga., and Williams was very thirsty. After arriving in New York at the end of the war, Williams headed home to Georgia, dressed in full uniform, wearing his medals, including a Purple Heart.

That Woman by Anne Sebba5/9/2023 Sylvia Plath’s The Bell Jarfamously opens with the line: “It was a queer, sultry summer, the summer they electrocuted the Rosenbergs …’’ But it is EL Doctorow’s The Book of Daniel, published in 1971, told from the perspective of the clever, restive elder son of the slain couple (the Isaacsons in the novel) that still stands as the most inventive evocation of the story’s deeper political meanings and human consequences. Meanwhile, fiction has made rich play with the strange truths and metaphors of the stories swirling around this “stubbornly mundane” couple. They were the first civilians to be charged and put to death for conspiracy to commit espionage in peacetime, and the case has long been judged, including by many of those on the political right, as the US’s ugliest mistake of the cold war. T he case of Ethel and Julius Rosenberg, the young Jewish American couple executed in June 1953 at the height of the cold war for allegedly passing atomic secrets to the Russians, has weighed heavily on the US political and cultural conscience for 70 years.

Twice tempted by a rogue5/9/2023 In fact, if he thought this godforsaken moor had any chance of claiming his own life, he’d cheerfully saddle his gelding and charge off into the gloom.īut it wouldn’t work. Rhys wasn’t in the least concerned for himself. Between the poor visibility and the surrounding terrain littered with chunks of stone and boot-sucking bogs, the risk of fatal injury was too great.įor the horse, that was. He couldn’t see but a few feet in front of him, which was why he’d decided to dismount and lead his horse on foot. The moisture in the air kept dithering between fog and rain, and the night was thick with its indecision. That left knee was on fire tonight, sizzling with pain as Rhys trudged through the granite heart of Devonshire, leading his horse down the darkened road. And in damp weather like this, his left knee throbbed with memories of marching through the Pyrenees and surviving the Battle of Nivelle unscathed, only to catch a Basque farmer’s hoe to the knee the next morning, when he left camp for a predawn piss. Since sometime around his thirtieth birthday, the little finger on his right hand just plain refused to bend. Fists driving through barroom haze to connect with his face had snapped the cartilage in his nose a few times, leaving him with a craggy profile-one that was not improved by his myriad scars. Maur, newly Lord Ashworth, was a broken man.īy the age of twenty, he’d fractured his left arm twice-once in a schoolboy brawl at Eton, and then again during an army training drill.
