And I liked that book because it dealt with different things like colorism. Jamilah: When did I first see a book that mirrored me? I think I was in fourth grade when I felt that I really found a book that reflected my experience, it was called The Shimmershine Queens, I don’t think it’s very well known but I kept it for a long time, it’s by Camille Yarbrough. Where and when did you first see yourself in literature? Hadeal: We talk a lot about windows and mirrors for marginalized readers and readers of color. What follows is a transcript of our conversation, which has been lightly edited for clarity and brevity. We had the wonderful opportunity to have a conversation with the author, Jamilah Thompkins-Bigelow, this past fall. Mommy’s Khimar was one of our favorite books published in 2018.

Turtles all the way down5/13/2023 The prologue was a magic ring, a desperate wish, an open wardrobe door. I don’t know the effect these words had on you when you first read them, but for me they were a temenos, the threshold between my chair and the faërie woods beyond the hedge, the invisible bridge from now to myth. Most of the weight is of course accounted for by Berilia, Tubul, Great T’Phon and Jerakeen, the four giant elephants upon whose broad and star-tanned shoulders the Disc of the World rests, garlanded by the long waterfall at its vast circumference and domed by the baby-blue vault of Heaven. In a brain bigger than a city, with geological slowness, He thinks only of the Weight. Through sea-sized eyes that are crusted with rheum and asteroid dust He stares fixedly at the Destination. Great A’Tuin the turtle comes, swimming slowly through the interstellar gulf, hydrogen frost on his ponderous limbs, his huge and ancient shell pocked with meteor craters. In a distant and secondhand set of dimensions, in an astral plane that was never meant to fly, the curling star-mists waver and part… Pratchett’s Discworld is imagined in the prologue to the first book, The Colour of Magic: At his right and left hand are Douglas Adams in sheer satiric glory, and Neil Gaiman, whose humour shades into great darkness. Among the humorous fantasy writers, Terry Pratchett has pride of place. To say that I’m a fan of Terry Pratchett’s Discworld is an understatement.

Cabin end of the world5/13/2023 But she did look at them again, and often. She requested they be put away because she would never look at them again. After her dads consoled her, she calmed down and gave them an oddly formal thank you for letting her look at the photos. Wen was so upset her hands shook and the tremors spread throughout her body. Wen was unexpectedly shaken by the photos and convinced she was, for the first time, looking at her real self and this real her was gone, forgotten, banished, or worse, that imperfect unwanted child was hidden, locked away inside of her somewhere. They had a set of five pictures of her lying on her back on a white blanket, awake and her balled-u p fists hovering next to her unrecognizable face. It took some convincing, but her dads eventually acquiesced. Last fall, Wen begged her dads to let her see baby photos, the youngest ones of her that they had, the ones from before the surgeries and before they adopted her. The fissure in her cleft lip went all the way up to her right nostril so the two sets of empty, dark spaces overlapped and became one.

Books like milk and honey5/13/2023 I mean, obviously, one simply cannot love all the poems. I have to say, I loved the poems I read online, but I didn’t love all the poems in the book. Then we kind of analysed the poems and talked about the “deep” stuff most poems were about. She read the poems to me, her English isn’t that great, so it was good practice for her. I was excited, because these sections really spoke to me. When I got the book I noticed it was divided into four chapters or sections actually the hurting, the loving, the breaking and the healing. I started doing some research about Rupi Kaur and bought the book for two reasons: I loved the poems I had already read and the cover of the book is so damn aesthetically pleasing. I read them all and realised later they were all written by the same author. I was just browsing the home pages where I kept coming across all these little poems with cute little drawings alongside them. I found out about Rupi Kaur through Pinterest. Milk and Honey is the first ever poetry book I’ve ever read in full.

Firestorm by Jan Neubert Schultz5/12/2023 "About this title" may belong to another edition of this title. Kay Bowes, Concord Pike Library, Wilmington, DEĬopyright 2002 Cahners Business Information, Inc. Having recently moved to the newly constructed town of Hinckley, Minnesota, they are caught in the path of one of the deadliest forest fires in history. The characters are mostly stereotypical-the rough-and-ready brothers, the grandmother with a heart of gold, the overworked father, and the girl who is changed-and flat, lending little literary value to the story. Firestorm Janet Neubert Schultz About This Book It's September 1, 1894, and 13-year-old Maggie Grant and her family are about to face a terror like none they've ever experienced. The actual novel itself, however, is less successful. The retelling of the real destruction wreaked by that powerful fire and how amazing numbers of people survived is a powerful piece of history. The descriptions of the rapidly spreading fireballs are horrifyingly presented as Maggie and her grandmother help with the injured and the dead. Separated from her brothers and not knowing if they are alive, she quickly realizes the importance of her family. The day the fire destroys the town and a terrifying number of its inhabitants, everything changes for her. She hates the dry, dusty beginnings of the town she has just moved to with her grandmother, father, and two brothers she misses her friends sorely and makes no attempt to become a part of the new life. Grades 3-6-The tragic story of the 1894 Hinckley, MN, fire, which killed more than 400 people in four hours, is recounted by 13-year-old Maggie.

It introduced the Bechdel test, a set of criteria for determining gender bias in works of entertainment, that has since found broad application. The strip was one of the most successful and longest-running queer comic strips. Characters reacted to contemporary events, including going to the Michigan Womyn's Festival, Gay Pride parades and protest marches, and having heated discussions about day-to-day events, political issues and the way lesbian culture was changing. Īccording to Bechdel, her strip was "half op-ed column and half endless, serialized Victorian novel". The first illustrated book edition was published by Firebrand Books in 1986. The strip was carried in Funny Times and syndicated to a number of gay and lesbian newspapers, and also posted on the web. Overview ĭTWOF chronicled the lives, loves, and politics of a fairly diverse group of characters (most of them lesbians) living in a medium-sized city in the United States, featuring both humorous soap opera storylines and biting topical commentary. The strip, which ran from 1983 to 2008, was one of the earliest ongoing representations of lesbians in popular culture and has been called "as important to new generations of lesbians as landmark novels like Rita Mae Brown's Rubyfruit Jungle (1973) and Lisa Alther's Kinflicks (1976) were to an earlier one". Alison Bechdel, author of Dykes to Watch Out Forĭykes to Watch Out For (sometimes DTWOF) was a weekly comic strip by Alison Bechdel.
